Winter is Coming: Construction Safety Tips for Windy Days

Winter and Cold Weather Construction Safety

As the colder months approach, the construction industry faces a unique set of challenges—chilly temperatures, unpredictable winds, and the ever-present need for safety. Before we dive into our hot cocoa, let's make sure we're also gearing up to keep our crews safe in winter conditions! At Construction Force, we’re committed to supporting your teams with the tools and knowledge to stay safe, warm, and productive all season long.

Here are some essential safety tips to protect your crew when the winds pick up:

1. Prevent "Flying Objects: The Movie" – Secure Materials for Safety

On windy days, loose objects become hazardous projectiles. Ensure that materials, tools, and equipment are properly secured or stored. Use weighted tarps, cable ties, and netting to keep items in place, especially when working at heights. Remember, items that might seem safe at ground level can become dangerous if they’re lifted by gusts of wind!

2. Dress Like an Onion: Layer Up!

Cold, windy days call for layered clothing—think of it as “onion” dressing! Layers trap warm air and help regulate body temperature, keeping workers comfortable and focused. Choose moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and wind-resistant outer layers. Don’t forget hats, gloves, and sturdy boots with good traction for icy surfaces. Winter workwear can be both functional and a statement of style—warm and protected crews are happy and more productive!

3. Stay Aware: Check the Weather and Make Adjustments

Weather forecasts are crucial when working in winter. Check conditions at the start of each shift and stay updated throughout the day, as winds and temperatures can shift quickly. If a strong wind warning is issued, consider scheduling more hazardous tasks for a later time and take a warm-up break instead. A quick team meeting with hot drinks can keep spirits up and promote team safety!

4. Protect Against Slips and Falls on Icy Surfaces

Winter wind often brings icy patches on construction sites, especially in the morning. Mark slippery areas, spread sand or salt to improve traction, and remind team members to walk cautiously. Ensure your crew has the right winter footwear, as good traction is essential for navigating icy sites safely. For those working at heights, double-check that harnesses and anchors are secure and up to date.

5. Inspect and Secure Scaffolding and Ladders

High winds pose a significant risk to scaffolding, ladders, and temporary structures. Before starting work each day, inspect scaffolding for stability and structural integrity. Secure ladders to prevent tipping, and consider postponing work at heights if winds are especially strong. OSHA advises limiting use of ladders during high winds for crew safety.

6. Have a Safety Program and an Emergency Plan in Place

Winter weather can change suddenly, so it’s essential to have an emergency plan ready. Establish a communication system to quickly alert your crew to dangerous conditions. Designate safe areas for taking shelter, and make sure all workers know the protocols in case of extreme weather. Safety isn’t just about prevention—it’s about being prepared for the unexpected.

7. Warm Up Wisely with Regular Breaks

Exposure to cold and wind can lead to fatigue, which increases the likelihood of accidents. Schedule regular breaks in warm, sheltered areas to prevent cold stress and ensure everyone stays alert and safe. Encourage hydration too, as dry winter air can cause dehydration, even in cold weather.

Winter brings unique challenges to construction, but with a few strategic adjustments, crews can stay safe, warm, and efficient. At Construction Force, we’re here to provide the skilled, safety-certified labor your team needs to weather any season.
